Just a quick note, I will write something longer and more detailed later. The fund has raised just over £5,000 since the verdict was announced which is stunning and heartwarming. It really was overwhelming to watch the email notifications flying in, especially in the first hour or so last Thursday, so thank you.
I have begun the process to transfer the money into the trust fund and expect that to be completed by Thursday at the latest. There is apparently a trust fund meeting today or tomorrow so I will have more accurate totals as to how much is left after costs etc. which I will share as soon as I know them.
The Daily Mail have written a piece today that is fair and over all very positive, despite the fact it puts them on the same side of an argument as Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross for probably the first time ever. I would, however like to clarify a couple of points about Ross & Fry.
Jonathan Ross has, to my knowledge, not offered to pay the fine or the costs of the appeal. He has been a vocal and very much appreciated supporter, and indeed the second most generous contributor to the original appeal fund, but has not made such an offer.
Secondly, Stephen Fry has not explicitly offered to pay the fine AND costs either, he offered to pay the fine after the first trial almost immediately, an offer that meant a lot as I was in the process of trying to start the fund at the time, but when Paul decided to appeal the fine didn’t have to be paid at that time. The fine itself has not increased after the appeal, however the prosecution’s costs have, and THAT is the extra Paul has to pay.
Stephen Fry’s tweet on the matter says “My offer still stands. Whatever they fine you, I’ll pay x” (https://twitter.com/stephenfry/status/2759551652728833) which repeats the original, incredibly generous, offer. The way it is phrased suggests, to some, that he is offering to pay an increased fine, which Paul did not, strictly speaking, receive. I do not know what exactly he is offering to pay, nor do I feel in a position to ask him.
The money being raised through the @twjoketrialfund has been for the appeal, the one that just failed, and for any appeal that occurs in the future (if it does, a decision won’t be made until at least Friday, possibly next week) Both Paul and Sarah have said any excess money will be donated to a civil liberties charity, neither have any interest in profiting from this ordeal.
If you have any questions on this, rather hurried and probably a bit muddled explanation please @ or DM me on the Twitter account.
